God is with you

Jos 1:9 “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous! Do not tremble or be dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.”

My friend Linda shared with me her daughters favorite verse which is above. I love to hear Christians favorite verse as I get to learn so much about them and God and things I may need to do differently. I am leary when peoples favorite verse is a promise to a specific people at a specific time. Very easily, we can attach ourself to a verse only to realize it is a promise to someone else.

For instance Joshua 1:3, talks about God giving every piece of land he walks on, to Joshua and the people of Israel as they continue into the promised land. It reads Jos 1:3 “Every place on which the sole of your foot treads, I have given it to you, just as I spoke to Moses. I have heard churches and tv evangelist misuse this verse which is clearly not for today when wanting to raise money for land. We need to be like the Berians and read verses in context. Looking to the verses before and after a verse to be sure of what God is saying.
That being said verse 9 is promise not only to Joshua, but also a timely truth to all believers. It is an assurance that God is with His people including Christians today. How do I know that? Well, scripture backs up scripture…

teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”
(Matthew 28:20 NASB)

Here Jesus says He is with us until the end of the age. Believers can be content in every situation because of this promise. It is like saying, “there is absolutely no way whatsoever that I will ever, ever leave you.”

Here is one more verse to encourage us.
Make sure that your character is free from the love of money, being content with what you have; for He Himself has said, “I WILL NEVER DESERT YOU, NOR WILL I EVER FORSAKE YOU,” so that we confidently say, “THE LORD IS MY HELPER, I WILL NOT BE AFRAID. WHAT WILL MAN DO TO ME?”
(Hebrews 13:5-6 NASB)

Here again we are told that God will not forsake the believer, He is always there for us in every situation. Isn’t that comforting?Another wonderful thing about God never leaving us is we “will not be afraid”, be bold, not in ourselves but in God who never leaves a Redeemed heart. What a mighty God we serve.

If We Believe

John 3:18 “He who believes in Him is not judged; he who does not believe has been judged already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.

Today’s verse is part of a conversation Jesus had with a religious leader called Nicodemus. As a Pharisee, Nicodemus would have studied and known his Old Testament. He would have been looking for the Messiah to come, who is Jesus. Read his story and the change in his life told in John 3:1-20;7:50-52, and 19:39,40.

In the verse above, Jesus is saying that when we stand before God, those who are not believers in Christ Jesus will be judged. Those who are believers will get a pass and their case will be “thrown out of court” as it were. Not for anything they have done, but because of the grace of Jesus and the forgiveness He gives to those who trust in Him as Savior . “For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; not as a result of works, so that no one may boast.”
(Ephesians 2:8-9 NASB)

Be careful here not to get stuck on the wording “believe on the name”. This means more than an intellectual understanding that Jesus was in history. It includes trust and commitment in Christ who changes believers into a new person. Our passion will not be to continue to sin but to please Jesus. Let me end with something Jesus said just before today’s verse.

“For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.
(John 3:16 NASB)

Have you trusted Jesus as Savior? I pray you will.

Jesus is the Light and Life

In Him was life, and the life was the Light of men. The Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.
(John 1:4-5 NASB)

You remember from yesterday that the “Him” in the verses here are referring to Jesus. He is the “life” and “light” which are characteristics of God.

“Life” meaning Jesus was creator in the beginning. Also spiritually, He is the giver if eternal life, for those who believe in Jesus. This kind of life was bought by Jesus on the cross, He was the perfect sacrifice to take away our sin and make us right with a holy God. This kind of life if given as a free gift to those who respond by turning from sin and trusting Him as Lord and Savior. Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me. (John 14:6 NASB)
“Light” symbolizes¬† Holiness, purity, Biblical truth. If we look ahead just a little verse 9 describes Jesus as the Light. There was the true Light which, coming into the world, enlightens every man. He was in the world, and the world was made through Him, and the world did not know Him. (John 1:9-10 NASB)

The word “comprehend” in John 1 at the top is unfortunate, a better word would be “overcome” as found in the ESV. Imagine you are in a dark cave with no light. One candle can overcome the darkness. Darkness here being symbol of error , falsehood, sin or wrongdoing, evil. Jesus explains the deeds of darkness very well, remember He is the Light. “This is the judgment, that the Light has come into the world, and men loved the darkness rather than the Light, for their deeds were evil. “For everyone who does evil hates the Light, and does not come to the Light for fear that his deeds will be exposed. “But he who practices the truth comes to the Light, so that his deeds may be manifested as having been wrought in God.”
(John 3:19-21 NASB)

There is our choice as we are all sinners. Will we choose the Life and Light of Jesus as Savior and Lord? I pray that you will, please think on that today.

Praise the Lord for His Love and sacrifice for us.

Jesus is both God and Man

Hello, this is Brooke. I know its been awhile, but lets dig in today and look at John 1:1-3.

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things came into being through Him, and apart from Him nothing came into being that has come into being. (John 1:1-3 NASB)

Did you notice how the words “in the beginning” are the same used in Genesis 1:1.

These verses talk about Jesus as the “Word”. He is both God and Man, the son of God pre-existent, before time. The universe was created by Him, “all things came into being through Him”. Jesus was the creator on those 6 days of everything imaginable.

For by Him all things were created, both in the heavens and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities–all things have been created through Him and for Him. (Colossians 1:16 NASB)

Tomorrow we will continue…
